ATC Sound called The Shadows Made From Light a post-Britpop record in the vein of Elbow and Travis, drawing out comparisons to Radiohead's In Rainbows and calling it "an absolute treat from first listen."

In 2019 his mother, Lois, died — the loss that got him started on his first solo record. His daughter was born in 2021; her middle name, Lo, became the album's title. The opening track, "Whole," opens with a recording of Lois singing him Happy Birthday.
SoundLooks praised the record's blend of alternative folk, art-pop, ambient and soul, and singled out Ballard's "striking celestial voice." JamSphere ran the same praise, calling Lo proof the wait for his debut "was well worth it."
